5MP Breast Imaging FAQs

What imaging modalities can be reviewed on a 5MP diagnostic display?

A 5MP diagnostic display is commonly used for breast imaging and can also support a wide range of general radiology modalities, including digital mammography, breast tomosynthesis, CT, MRI, ultrasound, CR, and DR imaging. Many healthcare organizations utilize 5MP displays as part of a multimodality reading environment due to their high resolution, luminance performance, and grayscale accuracy. Clinical usage should always align with facility protocols, FDA clearance, and applicable quality standards.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) recommends that mammography interpretation displays provide a calibrated maximum luminance of at least 420 cd/m² to support the visualization of subtle breast tissue detail and microcalcifications. The ACR also recommends the use of FDA-cleared 5MP or higher diagnostic displays specifically intended for mammography interpretation. The FDA requires mammography systems, including soft-copy display devices used for primary interpretation, are FDA-cleared for mammography use and meet applicable MQSA quality standards.

Both configurations can provide excellent breast imaging performance, but the best choice often depends on workflow preference and reading environment. A traditional dual 5MP setup offers approximately 10MP of total workspace and remains a widely used standard for side-by-side mammography comparison reading. A 12MP large-format display provides a seamless single-screen workspace that can simplify hanging protocols, reduce bezel interruption, and support multimodality and tomosynthesis workflows on one display. Many radiologists prefer dual 5MP displays for established mammography workflows, while others favor 12MP large-format displays for their unified viewing area and workflow efficiency. The ideal solution depends on reading style, modality mix, ergonomics, and facility workflow requirements.

DICOM calibration helps ensure grayscale images are displayed consistently and accurately over time. For breast imaging and diagnostic interpretation, proper DICOM calibration supports image uniformity, contrast visibility, and compliance with quality assurance protocols. Enterprise calibration software can also simplify monitoring, reporting, and remote management across multiple displays.

No. MQSA regulations require a medical physicist survey at installation and annually thereafter, but the physicist does not necessarily need to be physically onsite if the system and workflow support compliant remote review processes.

Many modern breast imaging environments utilize remote QA workflows that allow physicists to review calibration, performance, and quality control data remotely when supported by the display system, calibration software, and facility procedures. Facilities should always follow their physicist’s guidance, MQSA requirements, manufacturer recommendations, and accreditation protocols when establishing their QA process

An integrated KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) feature allows radiologists to control multiple connected systems from a single keyboard and mouse setup. In breast imaging environments, this can streamline workflow between PACS, breast tomosynthesis, reporting, and patient information systems without requiring separate peripherals or additional desk space. By reducing workstation clutter and simplifying navigation between systems, an integrated KVM can help support a more efficient and ergonomic reading environment for high-volume breast imaging interpretation.

Yes. This 5MP diagnostic display is FDA-cleared for digital Breast Imaging and is designed to support remote breast imaging and telemammography workflows. Combined with DBI’s CFS Enterprise calibration and QA management software, facilities can remotely monitor display performance, automate DICOM calibration, manage compliance workflows, and simplify MQSA reporting across enterprise and home reading environments.

DBI also offers a white paper outlining recommended display setup, ergonomics, and workstation considerations for creating a clinically consistent home breast imaging reading environment.
